Childhood Emotional Neglect and it’s affects in adulthood

Healing from Childhood Emotional Neglect – What It Is and How Therapy Can Help

Many people carry the quiet effects of childhood emotional neglect without realising it. You may have grown up in a home that looked stable, yet felt alone, unsupported, or unseen.

This form of trauma is often invisible — but its impact can be lasting. The good news is, with the right support, healing is absolutely possible.

What Is Childhood Emotional Neglect?

Childhood emotional neglect happens when a child's emotional needs aren't met — even if their physical needs (like food, clothing, and shelter) are.

You may have been told to “stop being so sensitive” or encouraged to hide your feelings. Over time, this can create deep patterns of disconnection, self-doubt, and difficulty trusting others.

Common Signs in Adulthood

If you experienced emotional neglect, you might notice

  • A sense of emptiness or emotional numbness
  • Struggles with self-worth or self-criticism
  • Difficulty expressing feelings
  • Fear of being a burden or asking for help
  • Feeling disconnected from your own needs or body

Many people describe feeling “something’s wrong” without knowing why.

Why It’s Often Missed

Unlike more obvious forms of trauma, emotional neglect is about what didn’t happen — the love, attention, and emotional support that wasn’t there.

This can make it hard to name or validate, especially if nothing “bad” seemed to happen.

How Trauma-Informed Therapy Helps

As a trauma and polyvagal-informed counsellor in central Bristol, I offer a gentle, grounded space to explore the effects of emotional neglect.

Together, we might:

  • Reconnect with your emotions and needs
  • Develop self-compassion and inner safety
  • Understand your nervous system using polyvagal theory
  • Unpack childhood patterns with kindness, not blame

You don’t need to have all the answers to begin — just a willingness to explore.

You Deserve to Feel Safe and Seen

Healing from emotional neglect is a journey of returning to yourself
